يعرف السواك من الناحية العلمية باسم salvadona pensica من الفصيلة الآراكية
ويأتي المسواك من شجرة تسمى الآراك وهي شجرة قصيرة معمرة ذات اغصان غضة تتدلى هذه الاغصان للاسفل او تكون زاحفة في بعض الاحيان وهي دائمة الخضرة ولا يزيد ارتفاعها عن 4 أمتار وثمارها توجد على هيئة عناقيد عنبية الشكل تكون في البداية بلون اخضر ثن تتحول للون الاحمر الفاتح ولها جذور طؤيلة تمتد عرضا تحت سطح الارض والجذور هي الجزء المستعمل في السواك ، لا يزيد قطر جذعها عن 30-40 سم وهي تنمو في مناطق عديدة في الاجواء الحارة الرطبة مثل مناطق الحجاز واليمن في البلاد الافريقية .

إن استعمال المسواك عند المسلمين قد بدأ منذ حوالي 1400 عام بينما استعمال الفرشاة لم يبدأ الا قبل حوالي 200 عام ويعود فضل ذلك لمعلم البشرية نبينا محمد (ص) حيث قال :”عليكم بالسواك فنعم الشيء السواك ” .
إن الفم هو المدخل الرئيسي لجميع اعضاء الجسم الداخلية ويمكن ادراك المخاطر التي يمكن ان تصيب هذه الاجهزة سواء جهاز التنفس او القناة الهضمية في حال اصيب الفم واللثة بالامراض حيث ان الجراثيم التي قد تتواجد بالفم وبين الاسنان يمكن ان تنتقل للمعدة عن طريق المريء فتسبب التهابات حادة او مزمنة قد تتطور لقرحة في الجهاز الهضمي وقد تنتقل هذه الجراثيم للجيوب الانفية فتؤدي لالتهاب في الجيوب مع مايصحب ذلك من صداع وروائح كريهة من الفم والانف وقد تنتقل الجراثيم هذه ايضا للدماغ عن طريق الاوعية الدموية مسببة بعض الالتهابات مثل التهاب السحايا .
لقد اثبتت الابحاث الطبية ان افضل الاوقات لتنظيف الاسنان هو قبل النوم لمنع بقايا الطعام بين الاسنان من التخمر اثناء الليل وعند الاستيقاظ ايضا لازالة ما قد يكون تكاثر وتخمر من الجراثيم داخل الفم اثناء النوم منعا لتكاثر الجراثيم والفطريات داخل الفم التي ينتج عنها نخر الاسنان ورائحة الفم الكريهة ، وقد جاء في الحديث النبوي الشريف ” اذا قام احدكم من النوم فليستك ” .

3- الآراك يزيد بياض الاسنان لاحتوائه على الكلوريد والسيليكات .
4- يحمي الاسنان من التسوس لاحتوائه على مواد حمضي تغطي المينا .
5- يقوي الشعيرات الدموية المغذية للثة مما يوفر وصةل الدم والاكسجين لها بكمية كبيرة مانعا حدوث الالتهابات .
6- يزيل رائحة الفم الكريهة لاحتوائه على مواد عطرية تطيب رائحة الفم .
7- اما بالنسبة لثمار الآراك فهي تقوي المعدة وتحسن الهضم ومنفثة للبلغم وذا جفت هذه الثمار وسف مسحوقها مع الماء فإنه يدر البول وينقي المثانة ومضاد للاسهال .
لقد فضل العلماء السواك على فرشاة الاسنان لأنه يقوم مقام الفرشاة والمعجون بآن واحد فهو فرشاة بأليافة ومعجون بما فيه من مواد مطهرة ربانية .

وقد بدء العلماء بعد هذه التجارب باسداء النصيحة لاستعمال المسواك بالاضافة لفرشاة الاسنان من أجل تنظيف الاسنان وحماية اللثة والفم من الميكروبات وانواع الالتهابات الاخرى

- لا يجوز استعماله اثناء العمل وفي الشارع العام
